I. Statement on the Preeminence of the HVP

There is only one standad Hartman Value Profile (HVP), and one HVP-Research Version conceived, developed, and published by Robert S. Hartman, Ph.D.

The Hartman Value Profile consists of two lists of value items consisting of 18 Phrases, and 18 Quotations (World and Self Focused), plus Hartman's Scoring System, and his HVP Manual of Interpretation providing the logic or architecture according to which the items were selected. Value items appearing on the HVP are linguistic equivalents of two lists of 18 mathematical formulas each. All value items must meet formulaic specifications given by Hartman. This feature of the HVP permits modification of face validity to meet the needs of special situations, or applications. Sensitive clinical situations, cross-cultural or cross-national applications of the HVP may require modifications. In recent years consultants, researchers, and other end users find that variations in the wording of certain items on the HVP are needed for special applications. Accordingly, Parallel Forms of the HVP are developed. These versions are based on the standard HVP. In recognition of this need, and respecting the Preeminence of the Hartman Value Profile (HVP), the Robert S. Hartman Institute proposes that all Parallel Forms be known as The Hartman Value Profile X modification where X is the name of the entity seeking Institute Approval and Recognition, and

II. Research and Professional Standards

The Hartman Institute endeavors to maintain the highest professional and research standards. This is particularly important with regard to applications of the HVP because human subjects are involved whose lives may be impacted by the results. Institute members, independent researchers, and consultants using Parallel Forms of the HVP for special market or demographic applications who wish to be in Good Standing, or otherwise obtain Institute Recognition, Approval, and Website Cross-Listing are requested to provide the following:

(1) Administer the HVP, along with the HVP-X Modification (The Parallel Form), to a sample of one hundred (N = 100) subjects. (2) Determine the correlation of the following scores: differentiation scores (DIF-1, DIF-2), intrinsic dimension scores (DIMI-1, DIMI-2), extrinsic dimension scores (DIME-1, DIME-2), systemic dimension scores (DIMS-1, DIMS-2), integration percents (INT%-1, INT%-2), dissimilarity scores (DIS-1, DIS-2); and AI%-1, AI%-2 scores. The threshold of statistical significance of these cross correlations between HVP and HVP-X Modification scales should reach the conventional p< .05 level of statistical significance. This procedure provides a measure of Concurrent Validity for the Parallel Form in question.

(2) Submit the Parallel Form, with proper nomenclature (HVP-X Modification), together with these validity data, to the Robert S. Hartman Institute through Dr. Leon Pomeroy,  drleonpomeroy@verizon.net. Include a brief discussion of reasons for the development of the Parallel Form in question.

(3) Those working with Parallel Forms of the HVP (HVP-X Modification) are asked to present relevant claims, and other explanatory text, to the RSHI for content verification aimed at assuring overall consistency with Robert S. Hartman's vision of Formal Axiology, and the derivative or secondary relationship to the Hartman Value Profile (HVP). Upon receipt of this supporting information, and compliance with the minimal requirement of recognizing the priority of Hartman's original methodology, the Robert S. Hartman Institute will recognize the Parallel Form of the Hartman Value Profile (HVP) in question, and acknowledge the petitioning entity as being in good standing with the Robert S. Hartman Institute (RSHI). The sole purpose of the RSHI is to preserve the legacy and integrity of Hartman's core value profiling methodology embodied in the original Hartman Value Profile (HVP). Parallel Forms of the HVP modify the face validity (linguistic equivalents) of the HVP only, and are otherwise based on Hartman's formal methodology as presented in Hartman's Manual of Interpretation.

III. Hartman Institute Data-bank

One of the goals of the Institute is to maintain a Data Bank for all research and marketing studies using the HVP, and Parallel Forms of the HVP. These data include studies of HVP construct validity, HVP reliability, HVP concurrent validity, HVP cross-cultural validity, and HVP market or demographic reliability studies. The original data base is contained in Hartman's HVP Manual of Interpretation (from the 60s and 70s). In recent years these validation data include the systematic research findings of Leon Pomeroy, Ph.D. as reported before the Annual Meetings of the Robert S. Hartman Institute held at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. These data are now being prepared for publication. The RSHI aims to catalogue commercial data bearing on the validity of the HVP as generated by consultants.

IV. Copyright and Downloading Information

Robert S. Hartman filed the first copyright for the Hartman Value Profile listing Dr. Cardenas Trigos, M.D. as co-author in 1959. Professor Hartman also created the first Parallel Form known as the HVP- Research Version. Copyrights for the HVP and the HVP-Research Version are owned by the Robert S. Hartman Institute. The Hartman Institute permits site visitors and consultants to download these versions, and then use them under the following conditions. A royalty must be paid to the Institute for each commercial use of the original or research version of the HVP, as well as parallel forms. Please contact the Treasurer below for royalty rates. Commercial users of the HVP are defined as those receiving payment of any kind. Commercial end users are requested to send checks at least once a year made out to the Robert S. Hartman Institute to:
