JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY:

THEORY AND PRACTICE

ANNOUNCING NEW JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY: THEORY AND PRACTICE

In 2008 the Robert S. Hartman Institute will begin publishing a new journal dealing with the theoretical and applied aspects of Hartmanian formal axiology. The first issue will likely come out in August, 2008, and the second in August, 2009, though dates are somewhat flexible. At present we are planning for one issue per year, but when a sufficient backlog of excellent articles has been accumulated, we will try to move to two issues per year. Each issue will be around 200 pages in length.

The journal will be named the JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY: THEORY AND PRACTICE.

Senior Editor, Rem B. Edwards, responsible for overall content and for articles dealing primarily with axiological theory.

Associate Editor, Vera Mefford, responsible for articles dealing primarily with axiological practice and application.

Book Review Editor, David Mefford, responsible for working with reviewers of books dealing with formal axiology and closely related subjects.

Distribution Manager, Jay Niblick, responsible mainly for distributing copies to subscribers.

Go to the Officers and Board Members page of this website for detailed contact information on these Editors.

CALL TO SUBMIT ARTICLES FOR JOURNAL

We are now ready to move ahead and start accepting articles submitted for possible publication in the new journal, and we hope that you will get busy and send us your work very soon to be considered for possible publication. The first 2008 issue is now complete, but be thinking about writing for the 2009 issue or beyond. The Absolute Deadline for submitting articles to be considered for the 2009 issue is March 1, 2009. Here are some ground rules for submitting articles.

GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

1. Articles should be submitted as e-mail attachments to Rem B. Edwards at: remb@bellsouth.net. They should be in MS Word or WordPerfect format with 11 point type, Times New Roman, single line spacing. As soon as available, look at past issues for other formatting details, and see several items below. Articles will be subject to blind review, so only the title page should give the name of and contact information for the author(s). The title page will be deleted by the Editor before sending the article on to members of our Editorial Advisory Board or to other reviewers for their assessment of its worthiness to be published.

2. If an article is accepted for publication, the author must submit an ABSTRACT not exceeding 250 words that summarizes its main points, as well as a short AUTOBIOGRAPHY not exceeding 150 words. Please include these from the beginning on your first or title page.

3. All articles published in this journal must have an obvious connection with Hartmanian axiology or value theory and its applications. Articles may be critical, constructive, creative, theoretical, or applied. No articles dealing with "axiology in general" will be considered. Many of you are doing research with and learning new things about people using the Hartman Value Profile, and we strongly encourage you to submit your findings to us so that others may know about your discoveries. More theoretical articles that advance or validate Hartmanian axiology, or that apply it to such areas as religion, philosophy, politics, psychology, psychotherapy, counseling, consulting, business, education, the natural and social sciences, etc., are also strongly encouraged and welcomed.

4. We will publish longer articles, shorter discussion notes, book reviews, and selected letters to the Editor. Long articles may be up to but should not normally exceed 8,000 words. Shorter discussions may be of lesser length.

5. If you wish to review a book for the journal, get in touch with Dr. David Mefford at: veraax@aol.com.

6. All articles must somehow advance our understanding of formal axiology and what can be done with it. No articles will be considered that merely summarize what is already known, or that have been previously published (except perhaps self-publication) or accepted for publication elsewhere.

7. Any tables, charts, and figures in articles must be structured when first sybmitted to fit on to 6 x 9 inch pages with 1/2 inch margins. If your article contains any tables, charts, figures, etc., you will save everyone, including yourself, a lot of work by submitting your article with the following T&B, R&L, settings. Set T& B margins to: 1.5; set R & L margins to 1.75. Everything must be in black and white--no colors. All images must be in JPEG format.

8. All printing, will be in black and white, 11 point type, Times New Roman, single line spacing, so submit all articles in that format. All articles will eventually be formatted to fit 6 x 9 inch  pages with 1/2 inch T and B margins and 1.75 inch R and L margins.

9. After much deliberation, we have decided to use the References/Works Cited method of documentation instead of endnotes or footnotes. All substantive comments must be in the main text itself. For guidelines, click here

10. Authors of articles and reviews will sign a contract with the Journal in which they give the Journal permission to publish their contribution, assign their copyright to the Journal, give assurances that they have obtained permission to quote or paraphrase cited material, but retain rights to use the article in their own professional activities. Authors will receive one free copy of the issue in which their contribution is published. Click here to view the Contract with Authors. All authors should print out this contract, fill it out, sign it, and either mail it by postal mail to Rem B. Edwards, 8709 Longmeade Drive, Knoxville, Tn 37923, or else scan it and send it to him as an e-mail attachment at remb@bellsouth.net.

11. For very general stylistic guidelines, please use the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing.

12. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use extensive quotes and paraphrases from copyrighted sources. Limited quotations and paraphrases fall within "fair use." See the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing, pp. 43ff for "fair use" guidelines.

SUBSCRIBING TO THE JOURNAL

The cost of the JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY: THEORY AND PRACTICE will be included in the annual dues for all members, except for those whose primary membership is in our Iberoamerican chapter.

Beginning in January, 2008, the annual membership dues is $65.00, which includes a subscription to the Journal for 2008 and 2009. The additional cost of $15.00 to members for the journal is very close to its actual printing, postage, and handling costs. Please add $5.00 more for postage if you reside outside the United States. If you paid dues of $80.00 in 2008, your subscription costs are covered for both 2008 and 2009, and you will need to pay only the basic $50.00 membership dues fee for 2009.
The price of the journal to non-members who wish to subscribe as individuals is $20.00 per year.
The price to libraries and institutions is $40.00 per year.
If you wish to order extra copies of the journal for your clients and friends, please send a check to our Treasurer, Darlene Clark, and contact Rem B. Edwards. Institute members may purchase extra copies for $8.00 per copy, postage paid. Non member subscribers may purchase extra copies for $10.00 percopy, postage paid. Orders outside the United States will require additional postage fees.

Iberoamerican Chapter members not residing in the USA or Canada, will have the option of paying only $50.00 for membership dues, but they will not receive the journal or pay $65.00 for membership that includes the Journal. However, for an additional $15.00 per year, plus $5.00 for postage, they also may receive the Journal.

Our Treasurer, Darlene Clark, will be responsible for collecting both annual dues and subscription fees. All fees should be sent to:
